Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a common oral health condition in Macau. It is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene practices, where individuals neglect to clean hidden areas such as the spaces between teeth and the inner surfaces of molars. This leads to the accumulation of dental plaque along the gumline, allowing bacteria to thrive and infect the surrounding tissues of the teeth.

The staging system for periodontal disease

Periodontal disease can be classified into three stages:Gingivitis (Mild), Periodontitis, Advanced Periodontitis

Gingivitis (Mild): redness, swelling, or enlargement of the gums, and bleeding

Periodontitis: the formation of periodontal pockets and the exposure of some parts of the tooth roots

Periodontitis(late stage): here is significant alveolar bone resorption. Teeth may become loose and there is a risk of tooth loss

The dentist provides meticulous treatment for periodontal disease

  1. Dental scaling: Removal of accumulated dental plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains
  2. Root planing: Removal of dental plaque and calculus from the surfaces of the tooth roots and within periodontal pockets to promote healing of the gums and periodontal tissues
  3. Periodontal surgery: The procedure involves lifting the gums to access the affected areas. Dental instruments are then used to thoroughly remove dental plaque and calculus from both the periodontal pockets and the gum surface

Prevention is better than treatment

Here are some tips for preventing periodontal disease

  1. Brush your teeth correctly twice a day, in the morning and evening.
  2. Clean between your teeth daily using dental floss
  3. Schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings
